These are the monocotyledon plants from the Poaceae family that compete there life cycle within a year. They include many important crops such as cereals, rice and corn. They also include many serious weeds such as Annual Ryegrass and Wild Oats.
Some herbicides used to control grasses are non selective and may seriously affect broad leaf or legume species present. Others often referred to as the grass selective herbicides will kill grasses but have little effect on most broadleaved plants.
