8. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

An agricultural insecticide for the control of aphids, mites and other insects. It moves upwards in the xylem of plants and is absorbed by insects by contact or through the sotmach. Various formulations are available as sprays, drenches and tablets.

9. APPLICATION METHODS AND TIPS:

Apply with high or low volume ground sprayers or by aerial spraying using fine droplets.
Apply in fine weather.
Soil drench around the base of Apple trees.
Tablet forms provide up to 2 years protection.

10. ADJUVANTS, WETTERS, OILS:

Pulse or organosilicone surfactant recommended when spraying Cotton.

11. EQUIPMENT:

High and low volume sprayers. Aerial application. ULV sprayers are not recommended by the manufacturer.
Aim for VMD of 150-180 microns and 60 droplets per square centimetre for ground applications.
Aim for VMD of 120-150 microns for aerial applications.
Tablets are buried ajacent to tree roots.

12. SPRAYER WASH OUT AND DECONTAMINATION:

Triple rinse with water and wetting agent.

13. WATER OR CARRIER DATA:

1000 L/ha for high volume sprayers. More than 100 L/ha for low volume sprayers. More than 25 L/ha for aerial applications.
Tablet forms are applied directly.

14. WEATHER:

Apply in sprays fine weather.

15. RAINFASTNESS:

16. SOIL:

No particular effect. Requires soil moisture for root uptake.
Tightly bound to soil.

17. PLANT HEALTH and OTHER EFFECTS:

Check MRL for export markets.

18. WITHHOLDING PERIODS:

Do not allow stock to graze treated trees or pasture next to trees.

19. PLANT BACK PERIODS or RECROPPING INTERVALS:

20. MODE OF ACTION:

A group 4A insecticide in chloronicotinyl or neonicotinoid chemical group with contact and stomach action. Acts on the nicotinergic acetylcholine receptors in the insects nervous system. Acetylcholine (ACH) is the neuro transmitter that is released by the excitatory nerve to carry the nerve impulse across the synaptic gap to the receptor nerve ending where it is normally quickly broken down by acetylcholine esterase . Imidacloprid mimics ACH and binds to nicotinergic receptor sites but is not broken down by acetylcholine esterase and consequently causes lasting overstimulation of the nerve leading to cessation of feeding and death of the insect. The selectivity of imidacloprid is due to some insect species having more nicotinergic receptors than other species. Mammals and other vertebrates also have fewer of these receptors which results in lower toxicity and the use of this active for flea control in pets.
Moves upward in the xylem water stream to growing points and transpiring leaves.
There appears to be a synergistic effect between imidacloprid and the fertiliser used in the tablet formulations.
Aphids may take up to 5 days to die.

21. PESTICIDE RESISTANCE:

Some species may be resistant or develop resistance with continued application. Rotate with products from alternative groups.
Use only one spray per season on annuals and no more than 3 sprays per season on perennials.

22. TOXICITY:

24. FIRST AID:

If SWALLOWED - Rinse mouth with water. Give plenty of water to drink. Don't give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
If in EYES - Irrigate for 15 minutes with plenty of water.
If on SKIN - Rinse with plenty of water, remove contaminated clothing, wash with soap and water.
If INHALED - Remove patient to fresh air.
If patient has symptoms or is concerned contact a doctor immediately.
Advice to doctor - Treat symptomatically. Nicotine like effects. Check pulse regularly as bradycardia and hypotonia are possible. provide supportive measures for cardiac and respiratory function. Give artificial respiration if signs of paralysis appear. Gastrolavage and saline laxatives used to accelerate elimination from body.
Contraindications. Avoid absorption promoting agent such as alcohol and milk. Oils and fats are of no special significance due to the low liposolubility of the active ingredient.
