7. RELATED PESTICIDES:

8. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A snail and slug bait for agricultural and horticultural use

9. APPLICATION METHODS AND TIPS:

Don't heap pellets

Multiple applications at low rates are more effective than single applications at a high rate.

Keep away from pets, poultry and animals as consumption of pellets may be fatal

10. ADJUVANTS, WETTERS, OILS:

Not applicable

11. EQUIPMENT:

Use spreaders that uniformly apply the pellets.

12. SPRAYER WASH OUT AND DECONTAMINATION:

13. WATER OR CARRIER DATA:

Not applicable

Spread straight from the bag.

14. WEATHER:

Apply after rain during humid overcast weather when snails and slugs are active.

15. RAINFASTNESS:

16. SOIL:

No specific effect.

17. PLANT HEALTH and OTHER EFFECTS:

Goof crop safety.

18. WITHHOLDING PERIODS:

Don't apply within 7 days of harvest.

Avoid application to edible parts of plants

Don't apply within 7 days of harvest.

Avoid application to edible parts of plants

19. PLANT BACK PERIODS or RECROPPING INTERVALS:

None required

20. MODE OF ACTION:

Death of slugs and snails within a day of consuming pellets.

21. PESTICIDE RESISTANCE:

Some species may be resistant or develop resistance with continued application. Rotate with products from alternative groups.

22. TOXICITY:

Poison schedule - S5

Summary:

Details:

Poison schedule - S5

Mammalian toxicity - Slight to moderate toxicity

Acute oral LD50 - 227-690 mg/kg (rats), 207 mg/kg (cats). 100-1000 mg/kg (dogs) ~75-100 mg/kg (children). A child death has been reported after ingesting 3000 mg of metaldehyde. [For comparison table salt is 3000 mg/kg]

Acute dermal: Moderate toxicity. LD50 - 2275 - >5000 mg/kg (rats).

Skin - Mild irritant. Repeated exposure may caus dermatitis.

Eye - Mild irritant. Not a sensitser. Repeated exposure may cause conjunctivitis.

Vapour inhalation - Moderately toxic. LC50 - >0.2 to >15 mg/L air (4 hour rat) and 0.35 mg/L (2 hour mice).

Chronic oral toxicity NOEL - 5 mg/kg/day.

Reproduction - High doses of 50-250 mg/kg/day interfered with reproduction and offspring survival in rats.

Not carcinogenic or teratogenic in animal studies. Suspected mutagen in some tests.

Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) - 0.005 mg/kg/day.

Metaldehyde and its metabolites may cause kidney lesions and affect the central nervous system.

It is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream. The main breakdown product is acetaldehyde. Metabolite can cross the blood brain barrier and affect the level of consciousness.

23. TOXICITY SYMPTOMS:

Within a few hours of ingestion - severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, fever, convulsions, coma and persistant memory loss.

24. FIRST AID:

If SWALLOWED -

If in EYES - Irrigate for 15 minutes with plenty of water.

If on SKIN - Rinse with plenty of water, remove contaminated clothing, wash with soap and water.

If INHALED - Remove patient to fresh air.

If patient has symptoms or is concerned contact a doctor immediately.

Advice to doctor - Treat symptomatically. Symptoms may take several hours to develop. Consider gastric lavage, after intubation, and administration of activated charcoal and a saline cathartic. Convulsions may be treated with intravenous (IV) diazepam.

Call Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26

25. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING:

Elbow length PVC gloves preferred but not essential if spreading by hand..

Cotton overalls and washable hat.

Boots.

26 RE ENTRY PERIODS and OTHER SAFETY ISSUES:

None required

28. ENVIRONMENTAL FATE:

Summary - Biodegradable.

Birds - Moderate toxicity. LD50 = 170 mg/kg. Bird deaths have been reported.

Fish - Practically non toxic. LC50(96hr) = 75 mg/L.

Invertebrates -Practically non toxic. EC50(48hr) >90 mg/L (daphnia)

Algae - LC50(96 hr) = 73.5 mg/L

Bees - Not toxic. Baits with up to 6% metaldehyde are not toxic to bees.

It has a half life in soil of several days. It is weakly absorbed onto organic matter and clay.

In water it rapidly hydrolyses to acetaldehyde.

It has an EPA classification for soil mobility that ranges from

Ground water contamination is unlikely due to it low persistance.

Accumulation in milk and tissues.

Pellets decompose to leave no harmful residue.

Toxicity to wildlife has been reported with baits containing more than 4% metalehyde.

Flowers may loose their colour when exposed to metaldehyde.
