8. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A systemic, contact or ingested, broad spectrum organophosphorous insecticide and spider killer with a moderate residual life of around 3 weeks.

9. APPLICATION METHODS AND TIPS:

Don't spray areas where bees are foraging or from 7 days before flowering to petal fall.

Apply when insects first appear and repeat as necessary (eg. at 7-10 day intervals).

Best results in humid overcast weather following rain or irrigation. Application in dry weather or on dry soils are not as effective and may cause some leaf drop.

Spraying oils often improve the pest kill level.

It has some contact effect when applied on dry soils. On bare moist soils it is not very effective.

Compatible with most other pesticides. Do not mix with alkaline sprays such as Bordeaux mixture or lime.

Do not mix with sulphur or sulphur containing products.

May mark fruit when mixed with Captifol.

10. ADJUVANTS, WETTERS, OILS:

11. EQUIPMENT:

12. SPRAYER WASH OUT AND DECONTAMINATION:

Triple rinse with water plus wetting agent.

13. WATER OR CARRIER DATA:

14. WEATHER:

15. RAINFASTNESS:

1 hour

16. SOIL:

17. PLANT HEALTH and OTHER EFFECTS:

Damages peaches.

Efficacy independent of pasture density. Redlegged Earth Mite kill in 6 t/ha pasture equal to that in 3 t/ha pasture.

18. WITHHOLDING PERIODS:

All registered crops: Cutting and grazing - 1 day.

All registered crops: Cutting and grazing - 1 day.

19. PLANT BACK PERIODS or RECROPPING INTERVALS:

20. MODE OF ACTION:

Active by contact and ingestion for insects.

A group 1B, organophosphate, systemic insecticide that acts on the insects nervous system as an acetylcholine esterase inhibitor.

21. PESTICIDE RESISTANCE:

22. TOXICITY:

Poison schedule - S7

Summary:

Toxic if swallowed, harmful in contact with skin, irritating to eyes, may cause sensitization by skin contact.

Details:

Poison schedule - S6

Mammalian toxicity - Highly toxic.

Acute oral LD50 - 50-100 mg/kg [For comparison table salt is 3000 mg/kg]

Acute dermal LD50 - 700-1000 mg/kg

Vapour inhalation - LC50 0.3 mg/L for 4 hours (omethoate)

Skin - Non irritant (rabbit). Irritating to mucous membranes (rabbit). Sensitizing (Gunea pig).

Eye - Irritant.

Chronic oral toxicity NOEL - ppm for two years. Repeated exposure may cause allergic disorders. Repeated monor exposures may have a cumulative poisoning effect.

Not mutagenic or teratogenic (i.e. does not cause cancer or reproductive problems).

Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) -

Main exposure routes - Handling concentrate. Air blast application.

23. TOXICITY SYMPTOMS:

Initial symptoms include headache, nausea, lack of appetite and fatigue during exposure or several hours later. Dizziness, vomiting, stomach pains, contracted pupils, muscle weakness, twitching, tremor, slow heart beat, blurred vision, sweating, respiratory paralysis and blueness of skin may occur with higher exposure levels.

Continual low level exposure may cause influenza like symptoms.

24. FIRST AID:

Contact a doctor or poison information centre on 008 119 244.

If SWALLOWED - Contact doctor and if advised then give atropine (0.6mg) tablets every quarter hour then every half hour until signs of flushed face, dilated pupils, dry mouth and fast pulse appear. Do NOT give anything by mouth to a semi conscious or unconscious patient. Medical attention must be sought after taking atropine.

If in EYES - Irrigate for 15 minutes with plenty of water.

If on SKIN - Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin.

If INHALED - Remove patient to fresh air. If breathing has stopped apply resuscitation

Poisoning usually occurs through skin absorption. Effects are cumulative and dangerous levels may develop before symptoms become noticeable. If you are exposed to organophosphate for more than 30 hours per month then levels of acetylcholinesterase enzyme should be regularly checked. If levels drop below 60% of normal then work with organophosphates should stop until levels improve. This may take several weeks.
