6 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A knock down and residual herbicide used in vegetables, ornamentals and as an additive to glyphosate and bipyridyl herbicides to increase the weed spectrum.

Spray oils with emulsifier such as D-C-Trate, Spray Plus, Uptake and Hasten at 1% of spray volume probably improve control more than wetting agents but should only be used for non selective applications.

11 COMPATIBILITY:

Oxyfluorfen has limited compatibility with many products. The addition of Flo Rite may reduce incompatibility problems.

Add Oxyfluorfen to the mix, agitate, the add paraquat, diquat or Spray.Seed.

Add Surflan to the mix, agitate, then add Oxyfluorfen.

Companies recommend a minimum of 250 L/ha water and more for application to seedling weeds.

13 SPRAYER DECONTAMINATION:

Clean up:

Clean soon after spraying to reduce the risk of forming dried deposits that may be difficult to remove.

Remove nozzles and filters and clean separately. Triple rinse with soapy water (eg 500 mL or g of Drive, Dynamo, Omo or Surf per 100 L water) or water plus 0.25% wetting agent and run through boom. This procedure is sufficient for spraying in other cereals or non selective applications.

Remove the nozzles and filters and clean separately and allow to soak in a mixture of 500 mL chlorine bleach (4%) per 10 L water for at least 30 minutes.

Rinse sprayer with soapy water (eg 500 mL or g of Drive, Dynamo, Omo or Surf per 100 L water) or water plus 0.25% wetting agent and run through boom. Drain tank and flush with clean water for a minimum of 10 minutes to remove all traces of liquid fertilisers or adjuvants containing ammonia, such as ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate, before adding chlorine bleach, because bleach and ammonia will react to release a toxic gas.

Fill tank with clean water and add 300 mL household chlorine (4%) bleach per 100 L water, flush through hoses and boom then stand for 15 minutes with agitation engaged, repeat. Rinse tank, hoses and boom thoroughly with clean water to remove traces of bleach.

Rinse filters and nozzles in water and replace.

Summary:

Some formulations of oxyfluorfen are some of the more toxic herbicides in general use. These are labelled S7 and have similar toxicity levels to many of the insecticides. Extra care should be exercised and protective clothing worn when using these products. Newer formulations are considerably less toxic.

Details:

Mammalian toxicity - Low to high. Formulated product is more toxic than the active ingredient usually.

Acute oral LD50 - 2700-5000 mg/kg (rats), [For comparison table salt is 3000 mg/kg]

Acute dermal LD50 - > 5000 mg/kg (rabbit) for oxyfluorfen however formulating agents are severe skin irritants.

Skin - Oxyfluorfen is not an irritant or a sensitizer. Product is ususally an irritant

Eye -

Vapour inhalation - LC50 - > mg/L air (rat).

Chronic oral toxicity NOEL - 2.5 mg/kg/day for two years.

ADI (Acceptable daily intake) - 0.025 mg/kg/day.

Effects on the liver have been observed in long-term feeding studies with rats, mice, and dogs.



Not carcinogenic (i.e. it doesn not cause cancer).

The product may cause harm to unborn children, irritate the eyes, respiratory

system and skin, if aspirated, may cause lung damage, repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking, vapours may cause drowsiness and dizziness.

N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is a SWA Class 2 Reproductive risk, may cause harm to the unborn child.

Teratogenic effects: In a developmental study with rabbits, 30 mg/kg/day, the highest dose tested, produced an increase in fused sternal bones in the foetuses as well as toxic effects on the mothers. These data suggest Oxyfluorfen may have teratogenic effects, but only at very high doses.

Mutagenic effects: Mutagenicity tests on rats, mice and on bacterial cell cultures have produced mixed results. Due to the conflicting results, it is not possible to determine the mutagenic potential of Oxyfluorfen.

Carcinogenic effects: The data suggests that Oxyfluorfen is not carcinogenic.

Other Species -

Birds - Practically non toxic. LD50 > 2200 mg/kg in bobwhite quail. LD50 > 4000 mg/kg in mallard duck.

Fish - High toxicity LC50 > ppm.

Highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates, freshwater clams, oysters, aquatic plants, and fish. Studies indicate a low to moderate potential for bioaccumulation in aquatic species.

Invertebrates - High toxicity.

Bees - Non toxic.

25 TOXICITY SYMPTOMS:

High vapour pressures may cause drowsiness and dizziness. In addition product is an inhalation irritant. Symptoms may include headache, irritation of nose and throat and increased secretion of mucous in the nose and throat. Other symptoms may also become evident, but they should disappear after exposure has ceased.

The product is a skin irritant. Symptoms may include itchiness and reddening of contacted skin. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking.

The product is an eye irritant. Symptoms may include stinging and reddening of eyes and watering which may become copious. Other symptoms may also become evident. If exposure is brief, symptoms should disappear once exposure has ceased. However, lengthy exposure or delayed treatment may cause permanent damage.

Because of the low viscosity, it may directly enter the lungs if swallowed, or if subsequently vomited. Once in the lungs, it is very difficult to remove and can cause severe injury or death. It is a likely oral irritant. Symptoms may include burning

sensation and reddening of skin in mouth and throat.

26 FIRST AID:

Contact a doctor.

If Swallowed: DO NOT induce vomiting. Wash mouth out with water. Give a glass of water. Seek medical advice immediately for oxyfluorfen.

If in Eyes: Flood eyes with water for 15 minutes if splashed in the eye. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. See a doctor if irritation persists.

If on skin: Wash with plenty of soap and water. See a doctor if irritation persists.

If inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. See a doctor if symtoms develop or persist.

27 ENVIRONMENTAL FATE:

It has a half life in soil of 30-40 days. It is moderately persistent. Oxyfluorfen is not subject to microbial degradation or hydrolysis. The main mechanism of degradation in soils may be photodegradation and evaporation/codistillation in moist soils.

In water, Oxyfluorfen is rapidly decomposed by light. It is nearly insoluble in water and has a tendency to adsorb to soil, it is normally sorbed to suspended particles or sediments.

In vegetation there is very little movement of Oxyfluorfen within treated plants. It is not readily metabolized by plants, but since it is not readily taken up by roots, residues in plants are generally very low. Residues of Oxyfluorfen accumulated in carrots and oats grown on previously treated fields, but not in cotton or lettuce.
