3 ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Trifluralin 480 g/L.

4 CHEMICAL GROUP: D.

7 APPLICATION METHODS AND TIPS:

Results depend on the rate and effectiveness of incorporation.

Trifluralin must be incorporated or covered with soil as soon as possible and within 4 hours of spraying.

A permit allows the use of rates up to 2 L/ha in minimum tillage situations with knife points and press wheels. Choose a speed that avoids throwing treated soil into adjacent furrows. Treated soil movement into furrows due to rain or wind may cause crop damage.

21 SELECTIVITY:

Crop tolerance:

Trifluralin may cause damage to Wheat and other cereals on heavy soils in wet conditions.

Mixtures of 1L/ha trifluralin with 150g/ha Lexone DF, 15g/ha Glean or 1L/ha Diuron 50% have also caused damage on heavy soils under wet conditions.

Varietal sensitivities:

Effect on Clover Species:

No significant effect.

Effect on Medic Species:

No significant effect.

Effect on Lucerne:

No significant effect.

Effect on Native Plants:

No significant effect on most broad leaved native species.

Herbicide drift is not expected to affect grass or broad leaved native species.

27 ENVIRONMENTAL FATE:

Half life in soil: 88 days at 20 degrees and 50% WHC in Mohlin soil.

Half life in water: days at pH5 and 35 C.

It has an EPA classification for soil mobility that ranges from

It has a leaching index of 0-1. (for comparison, atrazine is 10, simazine is 5 and chlorsulfuron is 25-30).

2. Concentration of Active Constituent : 480 g/L

Colour : Clear, red-orange

Flammability : Combustible - Flash Point > 63oC.

Formulation : EC

4. Poison Schedule : 5

8. Dangerous Goods Class : Not classed as a dangerous good.

9. Shelf Life : 60 months (5 years).

(When stored under ideal conditions- refer Page 4)

10. Mixtures Compatibility : Avadex BW (tri-allate), Glean (chlorsulfuron), Flowable simazine

Not normally compatible with Flexi-N as EC formulations tend to separate in the tank. Compatibility may be improved by diluting Flexi-N with water and ensuring good and continuous agitation.

11. Registered Crop(s) : Wheat, Barley, Field Peas, Rapeseed, Lupins, Chickpeas, Faba Beans, Safflower, Sunflower, Lucerne, Linseed.

12. Effect of Soil Texture on Herbicide : Soil that is in poor condition with many large clods present will not allow proper incorporation; spotty weed control will result. When clods are present weed seeds can germinate and survive in the clod and do not come into herbicide contact until they have established root systems.

Stubble cover greater than 40% will result in decreased weed control.

13. Effect of Soil pH on Herbicide : As the soil becomes more alkaline, there is generally a decrease in breakdown of the herbicide.

14. Effect of Soil Organic Matter on Herbicide : Poor incorporation and herbicide tied to organic matter so less available; more herbicide may be needed to give adequate control. To avoid this, chop and thoroughly mix crop residues into the soil to a depth of 10-15 cm by deep ploughing or tandem discing prior to application.

15. Mode of Action : Affects seed germination, some root absorption, Pre-emergent.

16. Rates Variation : 1.0 - 2.1 L/ha.

17. Rates Selection : Lower rate light soils. Higher rate heavy soils. Other rates generally depend on soil particle size.

20. Effect on Crop : Only noticeable if applied at incorrect growth stage and/or excessive rates.

21. Effect on Legumes : Affects bacteria-legume symbiosis by inhibiting the establishment of host-root nodule symbiosis.

21a. Effect on Clover Species : Minor effect when used pre-emergent.

21b. Effect on Medic Species : Trifluralin increases plant infection of Barrel Medic (Medicago truncatula) and Gama medic (M. rugosa) to root rot, Rhizoctonia spp and Fusarium spp.

22. Soil Moisture at Application :

DRY - Incorporation may be incomplete in dry/fluffy soils.

MOIST - Ideal conditions for incorporation.

WATERLOGGED - Incorporation will be unsatisfactory. Application rates may be excessive (increased wheel slip may cause application increases) and Herbicide may breakdown.

23. Frost Effects : Not applicable.

24. Frost Free Days Required After Application : Not relevant.

26. Recommended Water Volume : 90 - 450 L/ha boom.

27. Nozzle Type : Flat fan.

28. Recommended Nozzle Pressure : 170 - 340 kPa (24.7 - 49.3 psi).

30. Recommended Wetter : None.

31. Other Additives : No.

32. Rain Fastness : 0 hours.

33. Time Interval Before Effect is Noticed : Not visible.

34. Weed Symptoms : Limits root growth, especially the development of lateral roots.

36. Withholding Period : 0 days.

37. Plant-Back Period : Peas, Rapeseed, Safflower, Lupins, Sunflower - Just before sowing.

Linseed - 3-4 weeks before sowing.

Wheat, Barley, Lucerne - 1-4 weeks before sowing.

38. Spray Tank Clean-Up : Several clean water rinses.

39. Other Comments : Trifluralin must be incorporated within 4 hours of application. Inadequate incorporation may result in losses of trifluralin by photodecomposition or volatilisation. Once soil incorporated trifluralin is resistant to leaching. Variable weed control may result from delayed incorporation if trifluralin is applied to a wet, warm surface or if wind velocity is 15 Km/hr or higher. When associated with cold weather, trifluralin has occasionally caused extensive damage to newly sown medic pastures and rapeseed crops producing symptoms similar to phosphorus deficiency.

courtesy of A.J. Chambers, Vic. Dept of Food & Agric.

Poor results can be expected in zero till systems that conserve large quantities of stubble because of the difficulties of adequate incorporation and absorption of the herbicide onto the stubble.
