6 GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The 2,4-D's are mainly foliar absorbed, post emergent herbicides for the control of broad leaved weeds.

7 APPLICATION METHODS AND TIPS:

Varies depending on the formulation. See individual products.

The high volatile formulations are generally preferred in stubble retention and scrub or bushland areas where direct contact by the spray droplet may not be possible. Generally the short chain (high volatile) esters are more active than the long chain esters which are more active than the amine which are more active than the salts which are more active than the acid formulations. The esters which are oil soluble are often preferred for summer applications when weeds tend to be more waxy. The amine formulations are preferred where selectivity is marginal for example on oats and clover pastures.

8 WEATHER:

The ester formulations are generally rainfast in 3 hours whereas the amines and salts generally take 6 hours to become rainfast.

9 ADJUVANTS:

Wetting agents often used on hard to wet plants.

11 COMPATIBILITY:

Trace elements: Amine formulations are not compatible with many copper and zinc products. Ester formulations are generally more compatible providing the emulsifier is not overloaded and the product separates from the water (do a jar test).

See HerbiGuide Compatibilities button.

Regulations require the use of coarse spray droplets when applying 2,4-D. Application of the ethyl and butyl (high volatile) esters by air is under review.

14 HERBICIDE RESISTANCE:

The formulation is only expected to have an indirect effect on the development of resistance due to some formulations being more efficacious on some plants than others.
